How would you like to study at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) for free? It has been nearly six years since MIT first announced their MIT OpenCourseWare (OCW) program. More recently, MIT announced that the OCW program, a free and open educational resource (OER) for educators, students, and self-learners around the world, is online and will be completed by 2008. The OCW provides open access to course materials for up to 1,550 MIT courses, representing 34 departments and all five MIT schools. The goal is to include materials from all MIT courses by next year.
MIT provides just one of the 10 open source educational success stories detailed below.

J Wynia writes in to share a method to how to access remote directories, such as those on your web server through sshfs on Windows. Actually that's not the full story.
The full story is:
- Install Ubuntu in a virtual machine in Windows
- Setup sshfs and use that mount your remote directory
- Setup the sshfs-mount as a Samba share
- Access said Samba share from Windows

Ubuntu Tutorials :: How To Speed Up The Nautilus File Browser |

Tuesday, 06 March 2007 |
I ran across a few settings the other day that can help speed up your Nautilus file browser within gnome. This would work for those of you on older machines, of even those that want to get a little more out of your newer machines. My production machines are all about three years old so these few settings pull a little speed out of them. Yes, I know it should be time for me to get a new machine but since I use Ubuntu it still runs as well as it did the day I bought it!

The Open Source Advocate :: How to setup a firewall in Ubuntu |

Sunday, 04 March 2007 |
A firewall is a necessary piece of software on most operating systems. This is not true for Ubuntu, because the default install doesn't include any services that accept connections from the network. You can confirm this by running this command:
sudo netstat -plut
...
If you later decide to install a new service such as SSH or Remote Desktop (VNC), you will probably want to control who can access these services by installing a software firewall.

APC Magazine :: How to dual boot Linux and Windows XP (Linux installed first) |

Sunday, 04 March 2007 |
Scenario: You want to install XP on your machine alongside your existing Linux installation, on the same drive. You have installed Ubuntu already. (If you have already have XP installed, keep an eye out for our upcoming tutorial on how to dual-boot Linux with XP, with XP installed first.)
Tutorial Summary: We're going to use the Gnome Partition Editor (Gparted) from the Ubuntu LiveCD to shrink the Ubuntu partition on the hard disk and create enough space for an installation of XP. We'll then install XP, and, because XP overwrites the master boot record, we'll restore the GRUB boot loader so that either XP or Linux can be selected at boot time.
