The shiny, new Windows Vista beckons, and an upgrade is mighty tempting. But before you take the plunge, be aware that you may end up forking out a lot more money than just the cost of an operating system upgrade. Here are 15 reasons to upgrade and here are 6 on why you should wait on Vista.

Written by bibe
Tuesday, 13 February 2007
Most people will be freaked out when you pronounce the name iptables because it is not much of an easy to understand software, man page is huge as well as iptables capabilities. To be able to set up a home router, you don't actually need to spend nights and nights going through iptables man page, a grasp of the basis is enough to get your firewall up and running.
This tutorial provides a sample script you should be able to use out of the box or at most, changing 2 parameters will be able to get you running.

Popey.com :: Helping Windows Users
Written by bibe

I work in the IT sector. My job involves support and consultancy for SAP. As such people often ask me computer-related tech-support questions in my private life. I also get asked questions by colleagues at work about their home computers. Naturally as part of my job I also get asked tech questions by people at work which relate to their work computers. Even though I don't actually work in desktop support, people recognise when someone in the office is tech-savvy and they ask the geek questions.

O'Reilly Net :: Performing Brain Surgery On Yourself
Written by bibe
Friday, 09 February 2007
Some years ago Linux creator Linus Torvalds famously compared changing operating systems to “performing brain surgery on yourself”. I’ve quoted him often because so many people seem to have unrealistic expectations when they pick up a Linux DVD or CD-ROM. I’ve recently received a couple of e-mails in response to my articles here on O’Reillynet that illustrate Linus’ point beautifully and demonstrate part of the problem Linux has faced in gaining greater acceptance on the desktop.

HowtoForge :: Installing Ubuntu or Kubuntu, 6.06.1 LTS "Dapper Drake", on a Single/Multi -Boot RAID
Written by bibe
Friday, 09 February 2007
This guide describes how to install Ubuntu (Ubuntu+GNOME) or Kubuntu (Ubuntu+KDE) 6.06.1 LTS ("Dapper Drake") on a single or a multi -boot RAID system. It is meant as a variation of Ubuntu Wiki FakeRAID HowTo document, but digested and with minimum commentary. Its goal is to allow new Ubuntu users to complete an entire installation inside of 30 minutes, almost entirely by copy and paste (before they run away in panic to openSUSE and Ubuntu loses future Ubiquity Revolution developers).

Linux.com :: Enhance security with file encryption tools
Written by bibe

System-wide security solutions such as SELinux, AppArmor, Bastille and grsecurity can, in most cases, make your Linux desktop more than reasonably secure. But there are still cases where file or directory encryption is necessary. Here are some tools that can help you when you need to move files outside of your home computer, carry personal data around with you on a pendrive, or send email messages containing sensitive information.

ITWire :: Ubuntu? Not for me, thanks
Written by bibe

The distribution of choice when it comes to a first go these days is Ubuntu - even though the recommendations come from users of various distributions.
It's easy to see why Ubuntu is the chosen one (pun intended) - one only has to pop in a CD on any fairly modern PC and see the results. A graphical desktop is available for use fairly soon and anyone who wishes to take the next step and install the distribution has a very easy setup to follow. Of course, there are plenty of other distributions which are equally usable - Ubuntu just happens to be the one which is best-known.

Linux and other rants :: Linux in the Workplace: The Perfect Setup in One Day
Written by bibe
Friday, 09 February 2007
Recently, I read an article by Jim Sampson about him trying to use Linux on his work desktop. To summarize, Jim tried to use Linux over an extended period of time, kept hitting problems with MS Exchange and MS Office documents and finally gave up. According to Jim:
"I was trying to use Linux on my laptop in Dell's corporate environment... For the next ten years, I would go off and on back to this thought: I wanted to support the Open Source community, and to use Linux, but every time, the reality was that Linux just was not ready."

Steve Jobs :: Thoughts on Music
Written by bibe
Friday, 09 February 2007
With the stunning global success of Apple’s iPod music player and iTunes online music store, some have called for Apple to “open” the digital rights management (DRM) system that Apple uses to protect its music against theft, so that music purchased from iTunes can be played on digital devices purchased from other companies, and protected music purchased from other online music stores can play on iPods. Let’s examine the current situation and how we got here, then look at three possible alternatives for the future.
