Linux.com :: Vim tips: Using tabs
Written by bibe
Tuesday, 30 January 2007
Before Vim 7.0 was released last May, I usually had six or seven xterms or Konsole windows open, each with a single Vim session in which I was editing a single file. This takes up a lot of screen space, and isn't very efficient. With Vim 7.0, users now have the option of using tabs within Vim. With Vim's tab features you can consolidate all your sessions into one window and move between files more easily.

NewsForge :: A DIY calendar control in PHP
Written by bibe
Thursday, 25 January 2007
As a former ASP.Net coder, I've missed the convenience of Microsoft's built-in Calendar Control since I switched to doing Web site development in PHP. On a recent project I needed the ability to display a calendar with dates serving as hyperlinks to selected database items. I decided to use the opportunity to write some portable PHP code that I could use in other projects.

If you run a stable system, you don't have to miss out on the latest and greatest releases of your favorite applications -- just use a backport to get a package of a new release that's been "back-ported" to your older distribution.

Mark Shuttleworth's blog :: Secure IM in Gaim with OTR
Written by bibe
Thursday, 25 January 2007
I just learned about off-the-record, a plugin for Gaim which “Just Works”. apt-get install gaim-otr should do the trick on Ubuntu or Debian, then go into the plugin configuration list in Gaim and generate keys for the accounts you want to use it with. Voila!

HowtoForge :: Modify Your Partitions With GParted Without Losing Data
Written by bibe
Thursday, 25 January 2007
This article shows how you can modify the partitioning of your Linux system with GParted (Gnome Partition Editor) without losing data. This includes resizing partitions (enlarging and shrinking), moving partitions on the hard drive, creating and deleting partitions, and even modifying filesystem types. GParted is a free partition editor available as a desktop program and also as a Live-CD. It supports the following filesystems: ext2, ext3, fat16, fat32, hfs, hfs+, jfs, linux-swap, reiserfs, reiser4, ufs, xfs, and even ntfs (Windows).

IBM DeveloperWorks :: How to use Subversion with Eclipse
Written by bibe
Thursday, 25 January 2007
From the beginning, Eclipse included tight integration with the Concurrent Versions System (CVS) in order to provide access to change-management capabilities. Now, many projects -- notably those run by the Apache Software Foundation -- are using a different change-management system: Subversion. Find out how to use Eclipse for projects that use a Subversion repository.

Playing With Wire :: Why Gentoo Shouldn't be on Your Server
Written by bibe
Tuesday, 23 January 2007
Over the last year I have run a server using the Linux flavor Gentoo. While most of the servers I deal with these days run FreeBSD (WireLoad's servers included), I was curious about what speed I could get out of old hardware with Gentoo. Gentoo is a system built to make it easy to compile every little piece of software in the system with the biggest and baddest gcc flags imaginable for your particular hardware. In theory this should lead to a faster system.
The experience has been a bit of a mixed bag. There are things I really like about Gentoo: the package management, USE flags and the sophisticated dependencies system. But unfortunately the drawbacks are severe for a server setting.

Penguin Pete's Blog :: So You're Curious About Linux...
Written by bibe
Tuesday, 23 January 2007
Every now and then I make a personal acquaintance with somebody who's never seen Linux, but has heard of it. They want to know what it's like and should they try it. I always find myself making the same speech, and I figure lots of other Linux users do too. So here is my canonical About Linux speech. Feel free to clip and save so you have it all in one place for you to point to.
