GNEBU :: Debian Etch (RC1): The pleasure of using Linux
Written by bibe
Monday, 22 January 2007
Debian Etch is getting closer and closer to being released as Debian 4.0. The bug count is going down, and if nothing goes wrong it might be released by the end of January of first part of February. Not such a big delay from the original schedule for December after all, especially if we consider the nature of Debian and its release cycle. If they're able to keep releasing every 18 months or so, I think that no one will ever complain about it anymore.

Written by bibe
Monday, 22 January 2007
AJAX holds a lot of promise for web usability, and the underlying technology has already delivered some stunning applications. But it’s no magic bullet. Careful design is always required, and it must be based specifically on the technology at hand.

unixwiz.net :: Exporting MS Exchange 5.5 Users to Postfix
Written by bibe
Monday, 22 January 2007
While configuring a Postfix mail server to relay inbound email from the outside world to a Microsoft Exchange server inside a customer's network, we wanted to populate the Postfix "relay_recipients" table with all the valid internal users. Though it's possible to just "relay everything", it means that the Postfix server will accept delivery for invalid accounts and then have them be refused by Exchange. This puts the burden of generating a bounce email onto Postfix. By populating the relay_recipients table, Postfix can reject this mail outright before taking delivery. It's just cleaner all around.

InformIT.com :: HTML Forms and PHP
Written by bibe
Tuesday, 09 January 2007
In the previous chapter, you had a brief introduction to variables. Although you'll often create your own variables, you'll also commonly use variables in conjunction with HTML forms. Forms, as you've certainly seen, are a fundamental unit of today's Web sites, enabling such features as registration and login systems, search capability, and online shopping. Even the most basic site will find logical reasons to incorporate HTML forms. And, with PHP, it's stunningly simple to receive and handle data generated by them.

The Code Project :: How to create Microsoft Excel 2007 files on the server
Written by bibe
Tuesday, 09 January 2007
The adoption of XML as the native file format for Excel 2007 has opened up a whole host of new possibilities. Now for the first time we can create native Excel files on the server using standard tools. No longer is there a need to pollute your beautiful server room with a headless PC running Excel and an old VB6 app that uses OLE Automation to create reports. Such things can be consigned to the trash heap of IT history.
However, the new Office Open XML standard is so new there are precious few good code samples. This article aims to correct the situation by providing a flexible set of open source class libraries that you can use to create Excel spreadsheets on the server.

Ubuntu Tutorials :: Save Bandwidth With Multiple Machines with Apt-Cacher: Ubuntu (6.10)
Written by bibe

Over the holidays I was visiting my parents and helping my brother with his Ubuntu system. One of the biggest drawbacks of heading up that way for a visit is leaving the fiber-optic comforts of home and heading up to DSL villa. I swear its like rewinding a decade and hearing the hellish dial-up noises all over again!

HowtoForge :: How To Use NTFS Drives/Partitions Under Ubuntu Edgy Eft
Written by bibe
Tuesday, 09 January 2007
Normally Linux systems can only read from Windows NTFS partitions, but not write to them which can be very annoying if you have to work with Linux and Windows systems. This is where ntfs-3g comes into play. ntfs-3g is an open source, freely available NTFS driver for Linux with read and write support. This tutorial shows how to install and use ntfs-3g on a Ubuntu Edgy Eft desktop to read from and write to Windows NTFS drives and partitions. It covers the usage of internal NTFS partitions (e.g. in a dual-boot environment) and of external USB NTFS drives.
