If you have questions about Linux or open source projects, real-time help is often just a keyboard away -- if you know where to look online. Forums, mailing lists, and Googling are all useful when you have questions, but if you really want answers fast, Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is the place to look. If you've never ventured into IRC, here's all you need to get started.

When you're editing text, you may find yourself with two or three similar versions of a file. Often you are not sure which file has what content, what was deleted in one, what was added in another, and where exactly. You know what content your file should contain, but you are not sure which version to start from. It's one of those moments you wish your computer were smart enough to understand your problem and fix it for you. Debian having released the latest stable version of its GNU/Linux distribution, there is obviously a rush by Debian users to upgrade their distro. Debian is considered by its die hard followers to be one of the few GNU/Linux distributions which can stand up to other Unix OSes with regard to security without sacrificing those aspects which make GNU/Linux the most feature rich posix OS in the world.
But once you finish installing Debian, you need to do some housekeeping so as to enable you to play multimedia files which are encoded using proprietary or closed formats such as Microsoft's WMV files or Apple's quick time files.

Ubuntu Geek :: Bandwidth Monitoring Tools For Linux |

Bandwidth in computer networking refers to the data rate supported by a network connection or interface. One most commonly expresses bandwidth in terms of bits per second (bps). The term comes from the field of electrical engineering, where bandwidth represents the total distance or range between the highest and lowest signals on the communication channel (band).
Bandwidth represents the capacity of the connection. The greater the capacity, the more likely that greater performance will follow, though overall performance also depends on other factors, such as latency.

Debian is one of the most common distributions in the world. With a possible total of twenty one CDs, it is also one of the biggest. As you may have gathered from the fact that this guide exists, Debian is not the easiest distribution. However, anybody that is relatively competent with computers should be able to use Debian (after all, I am!). This is not a guide to every detail of Debian Etch - instead, it aims to get you going, so you can start tinkering away!

Back in my university days, when Netscape was the latest web browser on the scene and the Pentium MMX was the power user’s processor of choice, UNIX was part of my everyday life. Since graduating, my chosen desktop operating system has been Windows of some variety. This is partly because it was the most readily available consumer desktop operating system and also because it served me well for the most part.

Many architects believe that they cannot migrate their IT systems away from Microsoft(tm) Windows(R) and embrace GNU/Linux like all other professions are free to do.
A small practice in Johannesburg, South Africa, is doing it without Windows. We interviewed the senior partner to find out why and how Autodesk's AutoCAD was made to run on a GNU/Linux machine.

Until recently, Apache didn't have a serious open source rival. In Netcraft's latest web server survey, we can see one emerging. As always, Apache has the top spot, Microsoft's IIS is second, and the ever-popular unknown is third. Fourth is Sun's Java Web Server (formerly known as ONE, formerly iPlanet, formerly Netscape). But at number five, serving about 1.4 million sites, is something called lighttpd. Where did that come from? We'll look into lighttpd's history, basic installation and configuration, and some visions of the future.
