opensourcelearning.info :: Debian Etch: first impressions
Written by bibe
Thursday, 03 May 2007
Debian deserves some extra attention. The latest release is being distributed and I have no doubt that it will be installed on quite a few machines over the coming days and weeks. Personally I want to try it on the iMac Indigo and on a virtual machine under VMware. The netinstal images were a breeze to download and that was enough for now. I did not feel like downloading three DVD images or 22 CD images at the moment.

Linux.com :: Reducing spam with OpenBSD and spamd
Written by bibe
Thursday, 03 May 2007
We all know about the rampant spam email problem. Nearly all of the potential solutions offered for it are based on the idea of the mail server receiving messages, classifying them as either spam or legitimate, and then processing further (deleting or forwarding messages) as appropriate. The problem with this strategy is that you end up using extra resources on the mail server. Here's a way to get the same result while minimizing resource usage by preventing the spam from reaching the mail server.

Lunapark6 :: Debian 4.0 (Etch)
Written by bibe
Thursday, 03 May 2007
After 21 months of development Debian has released version 4.0 codenamed Etch to the public on April, 8th 2007. In Debian time 21 months is downright snippy, which is a good thing. Trust me on that. Their last (in)famous release Debian 3.1 "Sarge" took a near vista-esque length of time for release (3+ years), so here’s hoping the colorful Debian gang can keep up to their more reasonable year and a half release cycle.

builder.au :: 10 things you should do to a new Linux PC before exposing it to the Internet

1: Your purpose
Linux, like Microsoft Windows, is simply a computer operating system. When I talk to friends or co-workers who are embarking on the Linux experience for their initial time, this is the first point I stress. Linux in itself is not a magic wand that can be waved and make all sorts of computing problems disappear. While Windows has its own set of problems, so too does Linux. There is no such thing as a perfect or completely secure computer operating system. Will the machine be a desktop computer or a server; purpose is a key to understanding how to initially install and configure your Linux PC.

Written by bibe
Thursday, 03 May 2007
This is a detailed description about how to set up a Ubuntu based server (Ubuntu 6.10) to act as a file- and printserver for Windows (tm) workstations in small workgroups. This howto uses the tdb backend for SAMBA to store passwords and account information. This is suitable for workgroups for up to 250 users and is easier to set up than an LDAP backend.

Practically all Unix and Linux servers run an SSH service to let administrators connect securely from remote locations. Unfortunately for security administrators, attacks on SSH services are popular today.
