Lunapark6 :: Ubuntu Dapper review |

... As for my impressions of Dapper itself, I would enthusiastically say that Dapper is amazing! Without a doubt, I can say positively that this is the best Linux distro I have ever used. From the simplicity of having to download just one cd iso image for installation, to having the option to have the installation discs mailed to you at no cost, and to the beauty and speed of the apt-get system, as well as a promised 5 year support cycle, and the best community forum for the times when you are stumped on a problem, makes Ubuntu Dapper the best Linux operating system I have used to date.

Note from bibe: IMHO, the "best community forum" statement is questionable. But I completely agree on the other parts of the very nice review. |

majordomo - n: a person who speaks, makes arrangements, or takes charge for another. From latin "major domus" - "master of the house".
Majordomo is a program which automates the management of Internet mailing lists. Commands are sent to Majordomo via electronic mail to handle all aspects of list maintenance. Once a list is set up, virtually all operations can be performed remotely by email, requiring no intervention upon the postmaster of the list site.

MDLog:/sysadmin :: Backup your MySQL databases automatically with AutoMySQLBackup |

If you site relies on MySQL and stores its sensitive data in a MySQL database, you will most definitely want to backup that information so that it can be restored in case of any disaster (manual mistake to delete some data, software errors, hardware errors, server compromise, etc.). In a previous post I have presented that MySQL provides the basic tool (mysqldump) to perform database backups. This is required because backing up a database is a little different than backing up regular files.

Playfuls.com :: Windows Vista vs. Linux: Why Vista Might Lose the Battle |

The opening of Beta 2 testing at WinHEC for Windows Vista has once again raised serious questions about Microsoft's ability to keep its promises. We have witnessed up until now the inexhaustible reservoir of excuses coming from MS's officials, who have continuously fed us with plenty of reasons for Vista's delay: they're working on security, they're trying to make it more reliable for business, etc. Although it was initially destined to make its public debut way back in 2002, following years haven't shown us more than small bits of what was to become Microsoft's best product in more than 10 years.

LAMP technologies traditionally include Linux, Apache, MySQL, and, by happy coincidence, one of three “P” languages: PHP, Python or Perl. Of course, this is changing a bit. Many folks have long preferred PostgreSQL over MySQL because prior to MySQL 4.1 (or 5, depending upon your point of view), MySQL was pretty much a sophisticated toy, but LAPP probably doesn’t sound as cool. Others prefer Ruby to Python, PHP and Perl, but prior to Rails, many folks assumed that switching to Ruby wouldn’t be a good career move.

Some people like to work in Linux distributions that are at the cutting edge of technology. Other prefers stability at any cost. I want both, and Debian Testing, codenamed Etch, gives me that. The Debian project's testing tree has up-to-date software along with good stability, since packages are highly tested in the Unstable branch before they move to Testing.

This article teaches you, the reader, how to configure a GNU/Linux based server with three of the most important services that must be provided in a company, at home, a lab or anywhere else, both for clients and internal usage: web, database, mail. So it will be assumed that the idea is to host websites that use certain technologies such as a scripting language and a database (for dynamic sites), and also to act as a mailing tool, for sending and receiving email.
