NewsForge :: The Curious Incident of Sun in the Night-Time (by Richard M. Stallman)
Written by bibe
Thursday, 25 May 2006
Our community has been abuzz with the rumor that Sun has made its implementation Java free software (or "open source"). Community leaders even publicly thanked Sun for its contribution. What is Sun's new contribution to the FLOSS community?
Nothing. Absolutely nothing -- and that's what makes the response to this non-incident so curious.

Kerneltrap.org :: Linux: Potential Shortcomings in /dev/random
Written by bibe
Thursday, 25 May 2006
An email on the lkml pointed to an article suggesting potentially exploitable flaws in the Linux kernel's random number generator, /dev/random. Theodore Ts'o stepped forward as the original author offering a little background, "the Linux /dev/random generator has been around for a long time; I did the original implementation back in 1994, back when the crypto iron curtain was still being maintained by the US Government. As far as I know, the Linux /dev/random driver was the first OS-based RNG and predates efforts present in other systems such as OpenBSD, et. al."

OpenDemocracy :: Open source Ubuntu
Written by bibe
Thursday, 25 May 2006
I have lost count of the many seminars, conferences and talks I've attended recently where that magic phrase "the-open-source-operating-system-Linux" has resounded. Whether uttered by a New Labour policy wonk or a Polish art historian it has the same effect: the crowd of academics, bloggers and civil servants goes gooey, basking smugly in the image of thousands of bearded geeks quietly subverting the capitalist beast from the comfort of their bedrooms, chewing caffeine gum and trotting out code that rivals Microsoft's.

Linux Box Admin :: The first three books every Linux user should read
Written by bibe
Thursday, 25 May 2006
Anyone proficient with Linux had to climb the steep learning curve. Part of getting over the top for me was reading a hundred different Linux and Unix related books. From that list, three books stand out as the most useful and influential. I can't promise easy sledding; it will take some work, but mastering this material will demystify Linux and make you appreciate it more.

Debianhelp :: trac - Project Management Configuration in debian
Written by bibe
Thursday, 25 May 2006
Trac is an enhanced wiki and issue tracking system for software development projects. Trac uses a minimalistic approach to web-based software project management. Our mission; to help developers write great software while staying out of the way. Trac should impose as little as possible on a team's established development process and policies.

PC Pro :: Life's too short for Linux
Written by bibe
Thursday, 25 May 2006
A lot of people ask me about my opinion of that operating system with the penguin logo. It happens with such regularity that I've come up with a stock phrase I immediately fire back: life's too short for Linux. This is a bit flippant, but it's also a distillation of what I've believed, which is that Linux is great and everything, but only if: (a) you have too much time on your hands; (b) you just like tinkering with computers; or (c) you somehow define yourself by an ideological allegiance to a piece of software. If you actually want to get anything done, fire up Windows and get on with it.

PuntoInformatico :: Quando l'OpenSource viene fagocitato
Written by bibe
Tuesday, 23 May 2006

Nepotismia :: Ethernet Bridges under Linux
Written by bibe

For a number of years now, the Linux kernel has had the ability to turn any host with more than one network interface into a bridge. This article explains how it works.

HowtoForge :: Mirror Your Web Site With rsync
Written by bibe
Tuesday, 23 May 2006
This tutorial shows how you can mirror your web site from your main web server to a backup server that can take over if the main server fails. We use the tool rsync for this, and we make it run through a cron job that checks every x minutes if there is something to update on the mirror. Thus your backup server should usually be up to date if it has to take over.

PuntoInformatico :: Assegnati i Big Brother awards
Written by bibe

Written by bibe
Tuesday, 23 May 2006
