Ducea.com :: Linux Tips: The proper way to allow regular users to run commands as root
Written by bibe
Tuesday, 23 May 2006
There are many situations when you will need regular users to have more privileges than the normal user account they have. What situations? This will depend very much on a case by case basis but believe me there will be such cases… For example if a regular user needs to run a program that will change some some protected folder or file, or just a special root command (like shutdown for example). What can be done in such situations?

Linux.com :: Automate Linux installation and recovery with SystemImager
Written by bibe
Tuesday, 23 May 2006
Installing and recovering systems is one of the most time-consuming tasks for any IT department. Imaging software, commercial and open source, creates compressed images of a client's hard drive data and stores them on a central server. These images can then be used to restore systems or roll out new ones. One useful open source imaging applications is SystemImager.

O'Reilly Linuxdevcenter.com :: How Shellcodes Work
Written by bibe
Tuesday, 23 May 2006
It's not an easy task to find a vulnerable service and find an exploit for it. It's also not easy to defend against users who might want to exploit your system, if you are a system administrator. However, writing an exploit by yourself, to convert a news line from bug tracker into a working lockpick, is much more difficult. This article is not a guide on writing exploits, nor an overview of popular vulnerabilities. This is a step-by-step guide on developing a shellcode, a crucial point of any exploit software. Hopefully, learning how they work will help conscientious and respectable developers and system administrators to understand how malefactors think and to defend their systems against them.

Linux.com :: Faster remote desktop connections with FreeNX
Written by bibe
Tuesday, 23 May 2006
Virtual Network Computing (VNC) is a useful tool for accessing and controlling remote machines, but its responsiveness leaves much to be desired -- especially when you're accessing remote machines via a slow network connection. FreeNX also allows remote administration, but is much more responsive and works over a secure connection, and is free software to boot. FreeNX is also easy to set up, and I'll show you how.

NewsForge :: Poor, poor Apple!
Written by bibe
Tuesday, 23 May 2006
Apple has closed up its kernel for Intel-based Macs in response to so-called "piracy" -- that is, users running Mac OS X on hardware unauthorized by Apple. Poor Apple -- how can it possibly survive off of the $129 license fee for Mac OS X alone?

Matthew Ruschmann :: Using GMail as GNOME's default mailer
Written by bibe
Tuesday, 23 May 2006
I started using Gmail as my primary mail application a little over a year ago. For the most part, it has been a pleasurable experience. However, to my knowledge there has not been a simple way to make Gmail your default mailer in GNOME. There are firefox extensions that implement this functionality, but I used epiphany and the functionality does not extend to the entire GNOME desktop.

Slashdot :: Google: The Missing Manual, Second Edition
Written by bibe
Tuesday, 23 May 2006
Graeme Williams writes "In thinking about Google: The Missing Manual, Second Edition it occurred to me that the Google search box is like the Tardis -- there's a lot more inside that little box than you expect. Writing a manual for Google must have felt a little bit like writing a Manual of Everything, and I'm not sure I'm qualified to review Everything. However, I did read the book, and found a lot I didn't know about Google and using it. You will too."
