Google :: Google Web Toolkit - Build AJAX apps in the Java language
Written by bibe
Wednesday, 17 May 2006
Google Web Toolkit (GWT) is a Java software development framework that makes writing AJAX applications like Google Maps and Gmail easy for developers who don't speak browser quirks as a second language. Writing dynamic web applications today is a tedious and error-prone process; you spend 90% of your time working around subtle incompatabilities between web browsers and platforms, and JavaScript's lack of modularity makes sharing, testing, and reusing AJAX components difficult and fragile.

J_K9 Linux :: Linux And Security
Written by bibe
Wednesday, 17 May 2006
So what is this post about? Linux, and security. I have been talking to a security professional about my first article, Proposing a Compelling Linux Business Case. First of all, my article was aimed at the public sector, and so certain parts of it may seem irrational and outright wrong to a security professional. I’m hoping that one of my readers knows enough about Linux to be able to respond to him with a valuable argument, because this has reached a stage which is too complex for me to handle. Maybe you could give it a shot! Contact me via the contact form if you’re interested.

On some hardware (such as my new laptop) a simple Debian installation can't be performed easily, due to the lack of esotic or very new hardware.
This howto (from Debian's site) explains how to build your own Debian install CD, using your custom kernel.

Computer.org :: Can We Make Operating Systems Reliable and Secure?
Written by bibe
Wednesday, 17 May 2006
Microkernels - long discarded as unacceptable because of their lower performance compared with monolithic kernels - might be making a comeback in operating systems due to their potentially higher reliability, which many researchers now regard as more important than performance.

Written by bibe
Tuesday, 16 May 2006
A better CD encoder (abcde) is a console-based utility that grabs tracks off audio CDs and converts them to MP3, Ogg Vorbis, and other formats using backend programs such as cdparanoia and cdda2wav for grabbing tracks, and oggenc and lame for encoding them.

HowtoForge :: How To Set Up A Loadbalanced High-Availability Apache Cluster
Written by bibe
Tuesday, 16 May 2006
This tutorial shows how to set up a two-node Apache web server cluster that provides high-availability. In front of the Apache cluster we create a load balancer that splits up incoming requests between the two Apache nodes. Because we do not want the load balancer to become another "Single Point Of Failure", we must provide high-availability for the load balancer, too. Therefore our load balancer will in fact consist out of two load balancer nodes that monitor each other using heartbeat, and if one load balancer fails, the other takes over silently.

Slashdot :: Computer Network Time Synchronization
Written by bibe
Tuesday, 16 May 2006
For most people, having their clocks accurate to within a few millionths of a second is excessive. Yet there are plenty of reasons to ensure that clocks on networks and production systems are that accurate. In fact, the need for synchronized time is a practical business and technology decision that is an integral part of an effective network and security architecture. The reality is that an organizations network and security infrastructure is highly dependent on accurate, synchronized time.

PIA Waugh finds kung fu fight tactics a handy tool in the business world.
"Kung-fu prepares you for thinking strategically rather than reacting. I've learned to be the master of the first stroke and to take control of any situation," says Ms Waugh, who six months ago founded an open source consultancy business, Waugh Partners.
