SELinux, the U.S. National Security Agency's implementation of mandatory access control, is the most prominent new security subsystem in Linux®. It comes installed by default in Fedora and Red Hat Enterprise Linux and is available in easy-to-install packages in other distributions. This article shows you how to convert a non-SELinux system by hand in order to expose details about how SELinux is integrated into a system.

I can think of nothing more frustrating than not knowing the specific tactics of my enemy. Yeah, yeah…I know, I’m not supposed to know my enemies plans. I suppose if this were a shooting war and folks were getting killed, I wouldn’t be so flippant. In fact, there are those who suggest that They are not our enemy at all. Some suggest there is a mass-misconception about the struggle between Open Source-GNU/Linux and Microsoft.

Anyone who dual-boots, runs, or manages a heterogeneous network with Windows and Linux workstations must occasionally contend with offline or dead systems. Of course, the open source world has plenty of good tools to help get these boxes back on track, or at least recover valuable data. Trinity Rescue Kit (TRK) is a small yet powerful bootable Linux distribution that rescues, repairs, resets passwords, and clones dead Linux and Windows installations.

O'Reilly Linuxdevcenter.com :: Creating a Dual-Boot Windows XP and Ubuntu Laptop |

I started with my aging Toshiba laptop (which had about 90 percent of its 30GB disk filled) and, without losing any data, turned it into a dual-boot XP/Ubuntu Linux system with a shared partition where many of my user files were accessible whether I was using XP or Ubuntu. This made the laptop much more versatile, which is ideal for a developer who works in Linux but must also work in Windows for certain applications or for Windows-based development. A few months later, the monitor on that machine gave out. I bought a new HP notebook and transformed it into a dual-boot XP/Ubuntu Linux system right away.
This article describes the steps I took to complete the dual-boot conversions.

eQuickFixes.com :: Moving the Unmovable: Windows Disk Defragmentation Strategies |

One problem you may encounter in using the Windows Defragmenter program is “unmovable files” (the green bars) placed in an inconvenient location (on the right side of the display, at the end of your disk). The two most common “unmovable” files are the Windows operating system paging file (pagefile.sys) and the hibernation file (hiberfil.sys) that is used to store system state when the XP operating system goes into “hibernate” mode. An easy solution is to temporarily remove these files, then reinstall them after you’ve resized the NTFS partition.

York, United Kingdom - Mambo lead developer Martin Brampton today announced he was severing all ties with the Open Source project. His departure — which is eerily similar to the departure of an entire development team last year — comes in the wake of him finding himself unable to continue due to matters of conscience. The folks at Austrumi released version 1.2.0 of their tenny tiny distro today and since we hadn't tested Austrumi since the .9.x days, we though we might better see what was new. It's still the same great-performing feature-rich system, but there were some significant changes.

All About Linux :: Vector Linux - A sleek, secure Linux distribution based on Slackware |

Thursday, 11 May 2006 |
Over the years, I have installed and used quite a number of Linux distributions. But one distribution which I hadn't got the chance to install and use was the venerable Slackware. This was because I have encountered some difficulty in downloading this distribution from its official website - They actively encourage downloading the OS using a torrent rather than ftp. Anyway, recently I decided to download a relatively small Linux distribution going by the name Vector Linux.
