A review on Linux and BSD... looking for the best free OS
Written by bibe
Monday, 19 March 2007
I have been using GNU/Linux since 1996 with desktops and laptops without dual booting (no M$); i.e. for eleven years and I am surprised to find that I am not bored yet.
However, I have changed the distro very frequently since I got for the first time a laptop and got the superuser promotion. Since then one thought has been humming in my head... "what is the best free OS?"

Written by bibe
Monday, 19 March 2007
In the early 1980s, Richard M. Stallman (RMS) was working at MIT's artificial intelligence lab. The lab had just bought a new printer from Xerox, and had a few problems with it. With the old printer, they would have been able to fix the driver code themselves, but the new printer didn't come with source code.

Ubuntu tutorials :: How To Configure Wireless on a MacBook Using Ndiswrapper
Written by bibe
Monday, 19 March 2007
As many of you saw, this past week I bought myself a new Macbook and have successfully installed Ubuntu on it via bootcamp. I plan on documenting many of the steps I took to be published this upcoming week, but first I have some great news. I have successfully configured wireless on this machine despite all the talks that it wasn't available! If you are struggling with wireless on a Core 2 Duo Macbook you might give this a try.

ergo :: Tracking time using shell scripts
Written by bibe

If you are a consulting programmer, you might, on occasion, find yourself working on two or more projects on the same day. In the interest of fair invoicing, you will want to keep an accurate account of the time spent on each project.
I found myself in such a situation once. I could have developed a small GUI application that does this. Or I could have created one text file per project and create notes (with timestamps) in the project-specific text file. In the interest of efficiency, I picked a variant of the latter approach.

nixCraft :: Howto install and use Flash, Java, Real Player 32 bit plugins under 64 bit Firefox
Written by bibe
Monday, 19 March 2007
Recently I found nspluginwrapper which allows to use 32bit plugins on a 64bit Firefox browser using nspluginwrapper.
It is an Open Source compatibility plugin for Netscape 4 (NPAPI) plugins. That is, it enables you to use plugins on platforms they were not built for. For example, you can following plugin on Linux/x86_64 , NetBSD and FreeBSD platforms:
  • Acrobat Reader (v5.0.9, v7.0.1)
  • DejaVu Libre (v3.5.14)
  • Flash Player (v7.0, v9.0)
  • Linux JPEG 2000 (v0.0.2)
  • Mplayerplug-in (v2.80, v3.25)
  • Real Player (v10.0.5)

Lone Wolves :: A test drive of Debian/etch Xen

Daddy's got a brand new toy to play with :-) I have been looking for a new server for quite some time now. My old server is an aging HP NetServer LC3 Dual PII 233 Mhz that was donated to me. I use it as a general purpose home server and I also run a few other services off it, such as our Bugzilla and Subversion repository. It works but it was a little inflexible. I've had to repartition it a couple of times to make more room for my backups and maintenance wasn't too friendly with so many services running off the same OS.

I had heard about OpenDNS a while ago but for some reason never looked much into it. A magazine article tonight reminded me about OpenDNS so I thought I'd take a look. Well, I'm happy that I did so far. I thought I would outline a few steps for you to get OpenDNS setup on your machine.
