HowtoForge :: Chrooted SSH HowTo
Written by bibe
Sunday, 02 April 2006
This tutorial describes how to install and configure OpenSSH so that it will allow chrooted sessions for users. With this setup, you can give your users shell access without having to fear that they can see your whole system. Your users will be jailed in a specific directory which they will not be able to break out of.

SitePoint Blogs :: Evaluating PHP Applications
Written by bibe
Sunday, 02 April 2006
... perhaps the two most common questions I’ve seen people ask, when it comes to evaluating PHP applications are:
  • Does it loook good?
  • Is it easy to install?
Now not everyone is a programmer or a system administrator — "normal human beings" rank these highly because they relate directly to the two most pressing problems they’re facing: they want a site which is visually attractive and, with limited technical expertise, installation can be a significant hurdle to overcome.

Linux Forums :: Procfs from the Inside
Written by bibe
Sunday, 26 March 2006
"Procfs is a pseudo-filesystem (like sysfs and several others), which means that files in /proc do not exist in your hard drive, but the information they have is calculated on demand.

Linux.com :: Making the jump to Linux: Six frustrations
Written by bibe
Sunday, 26 March 2006
I am a high school science teacher who is attempting to make the jump to Linux. A few months ago I made a some changes to my desktop PC, and had to re-register my Windows XP installation. This infuriated me -- and my quest for a suitable Linux replacement began. I'm now a bona fide Linux user, but that doesn't mean I'm completely happy.

ZDNet :: Holding out for a (Linux) hero
Written by bibe
Sunday, 26 March 2006
Sixty years ago, Alfred Kinsey turned an academic research interest into fuel for a cultural revolution after extensive research revealed what was really going on behind America's closed bedroom doors.
These days, revolution is all about Linux. The word alone has become a catchcry for everything anti-establishment, anti-Bill, anti-licensing fees. If you listen to the hype, it's being used everywhere, in businesses of all sizes, to do everything but make the coffee.

The ConsortiumInfo.org :: Where (if anywhere) are the Boundaries of the Open Source Concept?
Written by bibe
Sunday, 26 March 2006
In the last several days there have been several stories in the news that highlight the increasing tension between ownership of intellectual property rights (IPR) and the opportunities that become available when broader, free access to those rights is made available. The three articles that struck me as best proving this point were the announcement by Sun Microsystems that it had released the design for its new UltraSPARC processor under the GNU GPL, a speech by Tim Berners-Lee to an Oxford University audience in which he challenged the British government to make Ordinance Survey mapping data available at no cost for Web use, and reports that a Dutch court had upheld the validity of the Creative Commons license. Each of these stories demonstrates a breach in traditional thinking about the balance of value to an IPR owner between licensing those rights for profit, or making those same rights freely and publicly available. Linux.com :: Multiple live CDs in one DVD
Written by bibe
Saturday, 25 March 2006
Live CDs do a great job of advertising Linux distributions. In addition to general-purpose live CD distributions, there are lots of task-oriented live CDs. Wouldn't it be great if you could carry multiple live CDs on one DVD disc? Nautopia.net has put up a script that you can use to make a custom DVD to boot multiple live CDs. Read more on Linux.com

NewsForge :: Command line Perl for sysadmins
Written by bibe
Saturday, 25 March 2006
Using perl -e allows you to specify a script right on the command line. It's a powerful, underused feature even for people who use Perl regularly. Perl's powerful command line options make it a more flexible replacement for sed, awk, and even vi. Combine perl -e with the command line editing capability of modern shells and you can, write, test, and debug in record time. Read more on NewsForge

O'Reilly Sysadmin :: Howto remove an user and improve security
Written by bibe
Saturday, 25 March 2006
Employee turnover in most organizations runs high. So unless you run a small shop with a stable user base, you need to learn how to clean up after an employee leaves. Too many so-called system administrators do not understand the stakes involved when they manage users. Disgruntled former employees can often cause significant trouble for a company by gaining access to the network. Read more on O'Reilly Sysadmin
