Linux.com :: PDFedit fills hole in the desktop
Written by bibe
Monday, 19 March 2007
PDFedit is not the first tool for editing PDF files on the GNU/Linux desktop, but it does have a strong claim to being the first truly practical one. Although only at version 0.2.5, PDFedit is already a practical solution for manipulating pages and text in PDF files, as well as for salvaging content in usable formats. It suffers only from an eccentric interface and some of the instability typical of an early release.

Linux.com :: How to hide an entire filesystem
Written by bibe
Monday, 19 March 2007
Simple file encryption is useful, but sometimes it's more useful to encrypt a complete filesystem or disk, such as when you need to protect a large set of files. Or you may need not only to protect, but to completely hide the presence of sensitive data from prying eyes. For these cases, here are several options for securing your systems.

Linux.com :: K3b enters new era with approaching 1.0 release
Written by bibe
Monday, 19 March 2007
One of free software's premier applications, KDE's CD and DVD burning suite K3b, is about to hit the big 1-0. This milestone touts rewritten DVD video ripping and a refocused interface design. The new release represents a level of feature-completeness and stability that surpasses all previous K3b releases and, perhaps, all free software competitors.

polishlinux.org :: The Power of Linux Console
Written by bibe
Monday, 19 March 2007
A console (terminal, terminal emulation) and a shell are equivalent to what is commonly known in Windows as the 'command line'. For many it's just a mysterious and unnecessary system tool, reserved only for the '1337'. For people like professional system administrators it's indispensable. The Linux console, in contrast with the Windows command shell, is an extremely powerful user tool, which allows to perform virtually any operation on the system.

Vitavonni's blog :: What made Debian cool
Written by bibe
Monday, 19 March 2007
Debian used to be the cool kid among Linux distributions. Because our stuff worked much better, was easy to install and especially to upgrade. Dependencies would be automatically resolved while others were fighting dependency chaos, and our menus would have all the apps in it, where others had to fill their menus on their own. And at the same time, Debian was very flexible and could be customized to become e.g. Knoppix. Our bugtracking was great and we were openly discussing bugs and all this stuff.

Debian Admin :: Network File System (NFS) Server and Client Configuration in Debian
Written by bibe
Monday, 19 March 2007
NFS was developed at a time when we weren't able to share our drives like we are able to today - in the Windows environment. It offers the ability to share the hard disk space of a big server with many smaller clients. Again, this is a client/server environment. While this seems like a standard service to offer, it was not always like this. In the past, clients and servers were unable to share their disk space.
Thin clients have no hard drives and thus need a "virtual" hard-disk. The NFS mount their hard disk from the server and, while the user thinks they are saving their documents to their local (thin client) disk, they are in fact saving them to the server. In a thin client environment, the root, usr and home partitions are all offered to the client from the server via NFS.

IT Business Edge :: The Five Things You Aren't Allowed to Discuss About Linux
Written by bibe
Monday, 19 March 2007
... So this time I'd like to talk about the five things you can't talk about without being attacked by OSS supporters. I'll take the heat, and as always, I'm not suggesting you stop deployment of Linux, I'm just suggesting you intelligently cover your backside.
